While the size of corporate, financial and other core practices of law firms in China has fluctuated over the past year, one area that has seen exceptional growth is antitrust law.
While recruitment of competition lawyers has increased since the introduction of China`s antimonopoly law in 2008, headhunters say there has been a sharp increase over the past year. Janet Chan, chief legal officer of recruiter Michael Page, told Reuters earlier this year that she had seen a 20 percent increase in demand for antitrust lawyers over the past 12 to 18 months. King & Wood Mallesons, for example, now has three partners and more than a dozen partners dedicated to competition law and wants to further expand its competition team in China, according to a partner in the firm`s antitrust practice. An important development coming soon is the integration of the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) into the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The AEC, which is expected to be launched in late 2015, will create a trading bloc of more than 600 million people with a GDP of more than $5.6 trillion, making it the seventh largest economy in the world. The ACS is unlikely to be an immediate inflection point in the region, as restrictions on foreign ownership are not expected to change much in the bloc`s early days. Nevertheless, the ACS should open more doors for legal work, especially in the areas of financial services, real estate, telecommunications and consumer goods.
Meanwhile, India has been grappling with slow growth for several years, with the current GDP growth rate hovering around 5%. Allen & Gledhill topped Singapore`s ranking for the second year in a row with 357 royalty recipients, including 141 partners. Not far behind, Rajah & Tann is in second place with 341 fee recipients in Singapore. While Rajah & Tann ranks second in Singapore, the company is Southeast Asia`s largest company in the top 50 of Asian charts due to its significant presence outside Singapore. “We were able to convince some of the best lawyers and law firms in Southeast Asia to join the Rajah & Tann Asia network and integrate, collaborate and serve clients under a common banner,” said Lee Eng Beng, Managing Partner of the firm. The company has 428 freelancers in its Asian offices and works closely with alliance companies in the region. “It is encouraging to see so many of our colleagues across Asia willing to join forces with the shared vision of becoming a leading legal services provider in this part of the world,” said Lee. Outside of Singapore, the firm significantly expanded its practice in Thailand earlier this year, hiring 14 lawyers from U.S.
law firm Hunton & Williams in Bangkok. While Rajah & Tann has seen significant growth since 2013, Lee says the focus is less on expansion itself and more on integration as a regional law firm with improved coverage, value and quality of service for the firm`s clients. Although Vision & Associates has two revenues less than in 2013, it retains the title of largest law firm in Vietnam in 2014 with 63 royalty recipients, including 15 partners. Vilaf (61) moves YKVN (55) to second place, while Phuoc & Partners (42) and Baker & McKenzie (35) are the fourth and fifth largest companies, respectively.
