The Office of the General Counsel (GoC) regularly organizes seminars to raise awareness of legal issues in the academic community. Legal Briefs is published monthly in e-Inside to keep teachers and staff informed of legal issues and their implications. Content is provided by the Office of the General Counsel, whose mission is to provide high-quality legal services to Kent State University in a timely and cost-effective manner, reduce litigation and ensure regulatory compliance. If you`re a student at Kent State University looking for a lawyer in Kent, Ohio, you`ve found the right place. Student Legal Services is a not-for-profit law firm that represents students on Kent State University`s main campus. Our goal is to help students understand and solve their legal problems. SLS also strives to be proactive by offering educational seminars, workshops, classroom presentations and rights-related publications for the student body. All students are encouraged to attend these workshops to resolve potential legal issues and consult with SLS staff members on specific legal issues. All students in good standing who attend Kent State University`s main campus have the opportunity to register on the legal list each academic semester.
Students who choose to pay the participation fee may use SLS for individual counseling and substitution during this semester, subject to the restrictions set out here. An exemption from participation in a university semester does not prevent the student from electing to participate in subsequent academic semesters as long as that student is otherwise eligible. In addition, individual students or groups can contact SLS to find sources of legal information or to assist with class projects that deal with the law and court proceedings. Inquiries regarding legal or legal education programs and suggestions on program topics are welcome and can be communicated by correspondence, in person or by telephone. Lawyers are available to provide legal and referral services to individual KSU students who have chosen to participate in the Legal Services Plan. If the nature or complexity of a problem or the desire for services is beyond the scope or capabilities of the program, additional services may be arranged at the student`s expense through lawyers or other resources in the community. The purpose of Student Legal Services, Inc. (SLS) is to help students identify and resolve legal issues so they can make the most of their educational opportunities while attending KSU.
If legal issues threaten to affect a student`s success, SLS will endeavor to resolve or minimize that issue within the limits explained in this document. Kent State University charges each student ten dollars ($10.00) per academic semester to participate in the prepaid legal services plan. The ten-dollar fee covers all of the student`s legal fees. All fines, court fees, filing fees and other fees imposed by the court are the financial responsibility of the customer. Legal services are provided through individual counseling with individual students. Counselling sessions are designed to provide students with answers to their legal questions, advice on how to proceed, and references to resources available to help resolve issues. Students may seek advice on a variety of legal issues, even if full representation is not available in this area. Advice may be limited depending on the area of law and the lawyer`s knowledge in the case concerned.
EDUCATION Students receive information about their legal rights and obligations through a combination of seminars, workshops and/or lectures presented by SLS lawyers or sponsored by the SLS office. In addition, a variety of publications are available to help students understand the law. By informing students, SLS wants to avoid serious legal complications in the future. All KSE students are invited and encouraged to participate in these programs. Students who have the legal consequences of their actions are best placed to make responsible decisions. Fast, efficient and high-quality legal assistance is SLS`s trademark. Proper attention to any legal issue, even if it is not perceived as serious, often prevents more complex legal entanglements. In addition, students will benefit from the experience by learning more about their legal rights and obligations. Legal services are only available during the academic semester in which the participation fee was paid. For example, a student who pays the participation fee for the spring semester is not entitled to services during the summer semester. If a student loses eligibility for any reason while being represented in an ongoing legal proceeding, legal services will be withdrawn at the earliest opportunity without unduly affecting the student`s legal rights. Legal services are not available to professors, staff, administrators, parents, spouses, parents, friends or partners of eligible students who are not otherwise eligible.
