A Letter of Consent from the Applicant`s Parent or Legal Guardian

We strongly recommend that Canadian children carry a consent form when travelling alone abroad, with only one parent or guardian, with friends or relatives, or with a group. For the purposes of this consent letter, a Canadian child is defined as any person under the age of majority (18 or 19 years of age, depending on the province or region of residence). A letter of consent is not a legal requirement in Canada, but it can facilitate the movement of Canadian children, as it may be requested by immigration authorities when entering or leaving a foreign country, or by Canadian authorities upon their return to Canada. The letter shows that Canadian children are allowed to travel abroad from parents or guardians who do not accompany them. We recommend that you talk to a lawyer about the legal issues that apply to you and your children`s unique circumstances, especially if your parental agreement includes special conditions for international travel. Having a declaration of consent does not guarantee that children are allowed to enter or leave a country, as each country has its own entry and exit rules.
