So, it is pets that are prohibited as pets. Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. For this reason, it has great potential for trade in wildlife goods and services based on sustainable use strategies. However, the illegal trade in species and the possession of these wild animals as pets is a recurring scourge in the country. This law does not analyze the treatment of animals in homes or if they live in an environment conducive to their development and well-being, so it is reduced to ensuring the stability of wildlife. But which ones fall on this list of prohibited animals? With regard to the importation into Colombia of pet birds and other pets (ferrets, rabbits, chinchillas, hamsters, guinea pigs and gerbils), the measures adopted by ICA through Resolution No. 1862 of June 2008 “Establishment of sanitary requirements for the introduction of domestic or pet birds into Colombia”; and Decision No. 842 of February 2010 “Establishing sanitary requirements for the introduction into the country of ferrets, rabbits, chinchillas, hamsters, guinea pigs and gerbils as pets or domestic animals”, or Resolution 10860 of September 2017. Despite their idealized appearance, thanks to their remarkable presence in the cinema, they are very aggressive animals and difficult to domesticate. The problem and the reason why they are forbidden to have them as pets is that they reproduce very easily, moreover, they are very weather resistant and need little food to survive, so if they do not have predatory species, raccoons can alter the ecosystem. The penalty is increased from one third to one half if the species is classified as threatened, critically endangered or migratory, rare or endemic in Colombian territory. It should be noted that there are 1,203 threatened species and 173 endangered species in the country. 9.
ICA procedure and tariff code for the importation of pets: Pet birds and other domestic animals (rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas and gerbils): In the same way, constant interaction with this type of animals can lead them to collect diseases of the human species and transmit them to their peers. The user must send an application for registration of his residence (address where the animal resides in the country he exports) in SISPAP as a farm of origin of the animals, for this he must send the following information to the post office: cuarentena.animal@ica.gov.co yes: * At the end of the process, the user must print his DZI, which must be presented to ICA officials at the point of entry, by which he will enter the animal in Colombia, at the time of its arrival. 3. Certificate of origin issued by the official body of the exporting country: The DZI issued by the ICA contains the hygienic import requirements established by the ICA to allow the entry into Colombia of pets, on the basis of which the official veterinary service of the exporting country must issue the health certificate meeting each of the requirements set out therein. This health certificate must have a date of issue after the issuance of the ICA DZI. The health certificate issued by the official veterinary service of the exporting country must be officially translated into Spanish (if written in another language) and presented to ICA officials at the airport of entry into Colombia for the appropriate health inspection upon arrival. 4. Application for CITES import and export permits for wildlife: since at the time of arrival in the country where the imported animals are inspected, this can be developed jointly with several government agencies, for this purpose, the user must present the CITES documents to the environmental authorities present at the point of entry into Colombia, which authorize their import or export. The CITES import certificate must be obtained from the Colombian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the body that regulates the possession and movement of wildlife, and the National Environmental Licensing Agency – ANLA (licencias@anla.gov.co tel. 3323400, ext. 2403).
The CITES export certificate must be requested from the Environment and Wildlife Agency of the exporting country. Note: For pets arriving by warehouse, payment by bank, as follows: Often people at home are not satisfied with a dog or cat. On the contrary, they try to have other types of animals that often do not fall into the category of traditional pets. And this, in a country like Colombia with great biodiversity, as well as recent trends in social networks, to have animals out of frame, have led many to make the decision to bring home all species, which can even be classified as a crime and also leads to a danger to humans and an alteration of nature.
